droplets dripping down my face and droplets near the back of my neck.

We arrive in town about an hour and a half later. The carriage pulls to a stop and the overseer opens the door. He extends a helping hand to me. I smile and thank him with a small bow of my head, despite the growing fear in the pit of my stomach. Of course, he smiles back at me. This will most likely be the last time I see him. It’s a bit sad now that I think of it. He hasn’t done anything wrong to me or Papa. But who knows what he has done to others. He doesn’t seem like the hurting type. I brush the thought away and step onto the dirt road. Master gets off and puts his hand on my arm again. The overseer calls goodbye to us as we walk to the center of town. Master brings me to short man with circular spectacles. He wears a hat and a long tan overcoat. Master talks to him and the short man begins inspecting me. I open my mouth when he says to do so and let him check my teeth. When the checkup is done he points a finger somewhere off to the left. Master takes his usual grip on my arm and takes me to this place. I get nervous when I see white men standing in front of a building. I can’t hear. The busyness of the town is consuming. Everything is clouded and I can barely feel my feet touching the ground. I stumble over myself, causing Master to lose his grip. I fall to the dirt. He grabs me arm tighter than before, and heaves me up. I hardly feel the blood fall from my scraped arms. I hardly feel the sweat trickled down my forehead. I hardly feel myself. One of the men takes me into some area with pens. I study them and am surprised to find people in them. Some are old others are young, while some are woman and some are men. I see one boy with striking golden eyes staring up from the pen at me, this new comer. The white man next to me unlocks one of the wooden doors and steps back so I can go in. I step into the room. The wood

“He’s coming,” the overseer warns. Abigail and I quickly pull apart, and

she stands up.

“Thank you,” says Abigail, staring at

the overseer.

He shines his radiant smile and winks. I tilt my head, curious as to why he chose to become and overseer. His smile fades when Master approaches.

“Goodbye,” Abigail whispers. She turns and walks back to the

house, without turning back.

Master sits next to me in the carriage, while the overseer drives it. It’s humid inside and I “You know,” Master begins, “I wanted you to stay. Afterall, want to escape.

I hear the door close and lock behind me. Light seeps through some cracks in the wood and over the door onto the floor. I look around and my breath catches in my throat at what I see.

Abigail is growing old. But Jane wanted you out, so I listened to her. She’s been through so much, like you.” He looks down at me and gives me a smile that sends chills up my spine. His eyes stay glued to my face as he states, “You look like your mother.” I set my jaw and take my eyes away from him. I look straight at the overseer’s back. But I feel fingers coil under my chin. I keep my head facing forward as my breath starts quickening. He brings my face back to face him with a bit of force.

“You have her eyes,” he says. He lets go of my chin and I

immediately turn away from him.
